Prime Time’s first appearance was at the Newport Jazz in New York Festival in 1977, followed by a Carnegie Hall concert in 1978. Some critics said that the compelling bass lines and rhythm guitar that drove some compositions made Prime Time danceable and signaled Ornette’s return to the physicality of rhythm and blues. But the band’s tempos were typically either too fast or too slow to actually dance to, and while they may have found their groove in the rhythm, concert-goers only rarely got up and busted a move. Keyboardist Dave Bryant, a member of Prime Time’s later edition (post-1988), found Ornette’s relationship with funk rhythms the same as his relationship with jazz rhythms:
